Don't you find it wonderful when the universe drops a perfectly timed gift in your lap? I'd been staring blankly at the word hungry cursor on my screen for ages, wondering what on earth I was going to write about, when I decided to take a short break and look through some coins.
Not long into my peruse I re-discovered this exquisite beauty and felt compelled to share it with you on the eve of Chinese New Year. Oh lucky me!!
The above photo is of a delightful 2012 Australian $5, 1/20oz Gold coin. The reverse (tails) shows a traditional Chinese dragon with a ‘pearl of wisdom’. On the obverse (heads) is the monetary denomination with Ian Rank-Broadley's extraordinary uncanny life like bust of Queen Elizabeth II.
Typically in Chinese culture the Dragon represents a combination of wisdom, power and good luck. Dragon's are also looked upon as being kind and caring. And when carried, they act as a talisman offering protection from evil spirits which might come in handy around Halloween!
With its scaly skin and raptor like claws the dragon is often shown chasing the flaming pearl. Lost in a whirling dance of its own, its eyes are wide in anticipation of the great prize 'enlightenment'. It is said the pearl represents their power over the element of water i.e. sea, rivers, lakes which enables them to ascend to heaven. The pearl is also seen as a metaphor for wisdom and enlightenment.
So are we not bound to these mythical creatures ourselves in our own quest for awareness and understanding? Oh yes and not to forget the writing of blogs!
